Drama characterized Parliamentary deliberations on day two on Tuesday in the August House in the capital Lilongwe with the Speaker Richard Msowoya suspending debates prematurely over security threats of the members.
The development follows the arrest of two members of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) namely Jessie Kabwila and Lewis Peter Chakhwantha on treason charges.
According to media reports, MCP officials are said to have purportedly planning to oust President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika in the WhatsApp conversation leaked over the weekend.
Speaking before the adjournment of the house, Msowoya said he is worried of his security and that of the other members in the chamber as Police officers heavily armed were all over with roadblocks mounted in each route from Parliament.
Earlier in the day, members disagreed on what to debate as opposition MPs asked the first deputy speaker Esther Mcheka Chilenje to suspended government debates and bring in the immunity bill for the MPs.
The opposition MPs argued that government is deliberately arresting opposition MPs on treason charges to divert the attention of Malawians.
The development resulted to chaos in the August House forcing the deputy speaker to suspend deliberations for an hour for consultations.
After an hour, Speaker of Parliament came in the chamber to suspend the proceedings to today Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile leader of government in the August House Francis Katsaila has faulted the speaker for suspending deliberations without consulting other arms of government.
