Police in Machinga have arrested a 20 year old Panganani Jafali for allegedly killing 94 year old Roben Kamoyo who was working as a security guard at Domasi Water Users Association Rice Mill in Machinga.
Machinga Police Public Relations Officer, Constable Davie Sulumba said the suspect will answer murder charges contrary to Section 209 of Penal Code.
Sulumba said Jafali allegedly killed the old man last week before breaking into the rice mill where he stole a bag of rice.
The suspect was on the run after the alleged murder on Friday night last week, according to Machinga Police Publicist.
He said the guard reported for duties around six o’clock in the evening Friday last week and was discovered dead the following morning.
Examination at Chamba Health Center revealed that Kamoyo died due to strangulation.
Meanwhile District Labour Office in Machinga has expressed concern over employment of old people such as the 94 year old Kamoyo.
Labour Officer, Chrissie Banda said it was not proper to employ such people adding that the deceased was supposed to retire at 60 or below.
She however called on relatives of the deceased to refer the issue to labour office for work compensation from his employers since he died while on duty.
Kamoto came from Namasalima village in Traditional Authority Kuntumanji in Zomba while the suspect comes from Muyaya nvillage in Traditional Authority Mposa in Machinga.
