At around Eleven O’clock in the morning yesterday, armed robbers opened fire at a pick-up from Game Haven Lodge in Bvumbwe.

The incident occurred in Chigumula in the city of Blantyre at a place popularly called “96”.

It is reported that the armed robbers had hired a minibus used for carrying passengers.

Onlookers say the vehicle had parked around the area for some time, until the vehicle from the lodge was approaching when they blocked the road with the minibus.

They had intended for the pick-up to slow down and stop, but it seemed the driver had been taken by surprise as the vehicle failed to completely stop which ended up clashing with the minibus.

The pick-up consisted of a driver and a salesman while the minibus is said to have consisted of 3 individuals.

The salesman is said to have gotten out of the vehicle and started questioning the robbers as to how they were driving. One of the men, questioned back “ukuyesa ndi zocheza?” meanining “you think we are playing?” at the same time opening fire at the salesman leaving him dead at the spot.

They then shot the driver on the leg upon searching the vehicle, in which they found no cash but rather just a cheque to which they did not take.

They then rushed back to the minibus which gave them a little trouble as it got stuck in a field as it was forced due to the clash earlier on. After struggles they finally took off heading down towards Limbe according to speculators.

More is yet to come as investigations are still underway.
