Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislators on Tuesday openly displayed lack of sincerity in the August House by unanimously agreeing to the decrease in the budgetary allocation to the Ministry of Education sector.
This is the second time government MPs have displayed non-concerned with the education sector despite the continued decline in quality of education in the country due to lack of learning materials such laboratories, classrooms and others.
Minister of Finance and Economic Development Goodall Gondwe proposed a cut in the allocation to the Ministry of Education by MK500 million from K113.8 billion to K113.7 billion.
Gondwe said government decided to reallocate the money to other ministries and government departments due to the fact that the Ministry has nothing to do with the money.
The reason given by Minister of Finance did not please opposition MPs with a big chunk of them accusing the government of being inconsiderate with the dwindling quality of education in the country.
Making her contribution, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) MP Juliana Lunguzi said the reason given by the Minister is lame considering the challenges the Ministry is facing at the moment.
Concurring with Lunguzi’s remarks, Rumphi East MP Kamlepo Kalua said government’s priorities are upside down.
Kalua questioned why the government is increasing the budgetary location to the Office of the President and Cabinet while reducing the allocation to the Ministry of Education currently facing enormous challenges.
The disagreement continued up until the debated on the allocation to the Ministry went into the voting stage where government MPs won by 80 votes against 50.
