University of Malawi (UNIMA) lecturers have today started a sit-in to force the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to hike their salaries.
The development comes barely two weeks after opening.
The strikes follow government failure to honour the 15 percent salary adjustment approved in 2015.
A visit by Faceofmalawi reporters at Polytechnic, one of the constituencies of the University of Malawi this morning found students just hovering outside.
Student Union President at Polytechnic Frank Msiska confirmed of the strike by the lecturers, saying the situation is worrisome to the students.
He said the strike if not resolved as soon as possible is going to affect the students as well as the academic calendar.
Last year July, the government approved to pay UNIMA lectures 15% with arrears but until now nothing has happened.
Meanwhile it is not known as to when the striking staff will resume offering their services to the students.
