Ten armed robbers broke into Mchinji District Council Cashier’s office where they attempted to steal a cash safe around 11 pm Tuesday.

The robbers armed with Panga knives and steel rods tied a guard who was manning the offices before breaking into the cashier’s office where they wanted to steal a cash chest and were trying to break another chest on the wall.

A Guard Duncan Chikafa told MANA that before the robbers could finish their mission, a driver from Water Board who usually parks the car at the council premises, saw the robbers and reported the matter to Police.

“At around 11 pm I saw 10 men, who surrounded me and told me not to shout for help or I will be dead, they stole my cell phone and tied me with ropes while beating me, seven of them went upstairs where they broke the cashier’s office door,” he said.

The robbers bolted when they saw the vehicle’s lights, leaving the cash chest on the table in the cashier’s office.

Mchinji Police Officer In-charge Maximas Bakali said the Police were still investigating the incident.

Recently, armed robbers killed two guards at a school and market in Mchinji and the police arrested the suspects.
