Consumer Association of Malawi (CAMA) Executive Director John Kapito has branded President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika as ‘Pontius Pilate’, saying he is ruling the country with an iron fist.

Kapito said this in an interview with the press after conducting a peaceful demonstration starting from Blantyre Old Town ahead of today’s World Consumers Day being commemorated under the theme ‘Poor lives matter’

In his speech, Kapito said Mutharika’s Ine ndilibe problem simply shows that he does not value the well-being of poor Malawians who are paying dearly for the economic tumor brought by his regime.

Kapito likened his statement to the behavior shown by ‘Pontius Pilate’ who distanced himself from the accusation that the people of Jerusalem inflicted on Jesus by washing his hands.

Turning leader of opposition and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, Kapoto branded him as ‘Judas Iscariot’.

“We are simply saying that Judas Iscariot was the one that sold Jesus Christ today, in the Mountain of Gethsemane. Mr. Chakwera himself has sold us because we gave him trust as the one of the people that can stand for us. When you are leader of opposition, means to be standing with the people that are being oppressed and his job was not to fight for himself; to say that because I lost an election, therefore I am going to make sure that I oppress the people.

“He was supposed to be in parliament and start speaking on our behalf, and start defending us. But see what Chakwera is doing in Parliament- he has sold us. Because once he was given a big prado and a big salary, then he was given two body guards, he started behaving as King Herod”, said Kapito.

Meanwhile Chakwera and government spokesperson Jappie Mhango were not readily available for comments on the matter.
