Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has released calendar of events for Mchinji by-elections scheduled for May 10, 2016.
The development comes barely days after it was revealed that a term for the reigning MEC commissioners’ in May and President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has to appoint new set of commissioners’.
In a statement seen by FaceofMalawi report signed by MEC Public Relations Officer Sangwani Mwafulirwa, the draft calendar solely depends on the availability of funds.
“MEC is engaging relevant authorities for funding of the by-elections. If the funding is secured on time, MEC will conduct the by-elections in tandem with the attached draft calendar. The dates in the electoral calendar are provisional and may be revised depending on timing of funding access,” said Mwafulirwa.
Mchinji West Constituency fell vacant following the sudden of Member of Parliament (MP) for the area Billy Kanjira Banda (Malawi Congress Party), who died last month while attending church service.
