As Malawians across the country were on Saturday remembering late President Bingu wa Mutharika with the main memorial service at Chingazi Parish in Thyolo, family members have asked the government to erect his statue.

Arthur Masamba made the proposal on behalf of the family, saying late Mutharika was not just an ordinary man.

“When this time comes, our family is always distraught, as we remember a man who held our clan together, always welcoming, always loving. He was a man full of advice and wisdom. We all loved him, not just as a head of state but head of our family,” lamented Masamba.

Masamba further requested the government to consider setting up a public holiday in memory of late Bingu wa Mutharika.

Late Bingu wa Mutharika died of cardiac arrest in 2012 while still the President of the republic of Malawi but up today Malawians doesn’t know the exact date.

The confusion also resurfaced during the memory service on Saturday as family representative told people tha Bingu died on April 5, 2012 while his tombstone indicated that he died on April 6 2012.
