Disagreement erupted on Friday at Kanengo Auction Floors between buyers and farmers over lower prices being offered forcing the suspension of sales at the market.

The development comes barely two days after President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika officially opened the 2016 Tobacco Selling Season.

In his speech Mutharika, asked buyers to offer better prices to farmers, saying farmers invest a lot in the Malawi’s green gold.

Despite the pre, buyers continued offering lower prices and things got out of hand on Friday when buyers were the leaf at a minimum price of 80 cents and a maximum price of $1.84 per Kg.

This did not please farmers leading to the suspension of the sales.

Meanwhile the sales are expected to resume on Monday after discussions.
