There was commotion at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in the capital Lilongwe on Monday when police officers stopped Malawi Congress Party supporters from entering Kamuzu International Airport premises to welcome Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

Chakwera was coming from Portugal where he was voted Vice President of the Portugal based Political Parties grouping, Christian Democratic Institute (CDI) International.

The development did not please MCP to officials and members who retaliated by using force to find their way into the airport.

But about 30 uniformed police officers were seen at the place, with some of them in anti-riot police vehicle.

When quizzed, one of the police officers told the media that they received orders from above not to allow MCP supporters to welcome Chakwera.

Speaking to MCP supporters outside the airport, Chakwera expressed shock over the move taken by the DPP government, saying it’s uncalled for.

Chakwera said the move taken by DPP is a threat to democracy in the country.
