A suspected thief in Kasungu identified Palian Kamando has been beaten to death by angry mob.
Police in Kasungu have confirmed of the development in an interview with the press, saying the incident happened on the night of April 17 2016.
According to the Police, the suspected was being accused of stealing chickens, kitchen utensils and clothes from various households in the village.
It is alleged that the deceased stole a chicken belonging to his employer which upon being confronted confessed to have stolen it.
“Phiri reported the matter to Community Policing Forum who accompanied the deceased to show them where he had sold the chicken. Upon reaching the place where the deceased had sold the chicken.Some people from the area also lodged complaints against the deceased that he had broken into houses of some people in the area where he made away with clothes and kitchen uttensils which the deceased confessed to have committed the crime,” reads in part the police statement.
According to the police, the villagers also alleged that they had seen the deceased selling the alleged stolen properties in beer drinking joints.
“After confrontations, it was agreed that the deceased should also lead the people to places where he had sold the same which the deceased failed.
“This did not go well with some un identified community members who pounced on the deceased and started assaulting him. He was rescued by the Community Policing Forum members who took him back to the place where he was working. The following morning the deceased was found dead in the room where he was being kept as he was waiting to be taken to police that morning,” added the statement.
Meanwhile police have lodged investigations on the incident. Further,police is advising people not to take the law into their own hands but hand over any suspect they may apprehend to their nearest police station.
The deceased hailed from Tsungwani village,Traditional Authority Dzoole in Dowa district.
