Police in Ndirande have arrested a director who is also the owner of Unique Private Primary School in Ndirande Township.

Limbani Kandaya, 33, has been arrested on allegations that he swindled money which he collected from standard eight learners at his school for processing identity cards to enable them sit for this year’s Primary School Leaving Certificate Examinations (PSLSCE) which started earlier this week.

In an interview with the Malawi News Agency (Mana), Officer in Charge for Ndirande Police Sub Station, Assistant Commissioner Macdonald Mazonga said the man was brought to the police station on Wednesday morning by angry people including parents of 38 candidates from his school who were ready to write the examinations.

“A crowd of people including learners chanting and singing brought us a man who is also director and owner of the school alleging he collected money from standard eight pupils at the school for processing identity cards to enable them write this year’s PSLCE which he did not do,” said Mazonga.

According to Mazonga each candidate paid MK4, 040 which totalled to MK153,520.

Mazonga said during interrogations the man was quick to admit that he collected the money and used it for personal use since he was desperate.

He said the police calmed down the crowd and locked up the man who will appear before court to answer charges of theft contrary to section 278 of the penal code.

Kandaya comes from Masaula Village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba district.
