President Arthur Peter Mutharika on Wednesday donated K20 million to Mzuzu University meant for the refurbishment and restocking of the institution’s 350-seater library which was gutted down by fire on December 19, 2015.

The donation comes at a time when stakeholders from across the board are mobilizing resources to bring back an academic structure that previously housed 50,000 books and 100 computers among other things.

During his visit to the university, the President said his donation should symbolize the will that should be there to bring the situation back to normal.

“My government will fully lead the efforts to reconstruct, refurbish and restock the damaged library so that the academic community at Mzuni returns to their normal life for academic success. I therefore call upon other stakeholders to join the wagon and contribute what they can afford towards this good cause,” said President Mutharika who is also Mzuni Chancellor.

In the interim, students are using makeshift structures around the campus for library services.

Meanwhile, Mzuzu University management continues to seek assistance from various stakeholders on the project. The university’s website is quoted furnishing information on bank details.

“Donations may also be made to the following account, which will be overseen by the Board of the Mzuzu University Trust Fund. Account Name- Mzuzu University Library Fund; Standard Bank Limited; Mzuzu; Account No – 01400362283300 (Malawi Kwacha Account) 0240036228300 (US Dollar Account),” reads the statement.
