The government of Malawi through the office of the Attorney General has stopped sheriffs from selling six vehicles impounded from Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) over unpaid debts.
The auction of the six vehicles also expected to be held on Friday last week.
MEC owes three companies namely Universal Trading Company, Platinum Solutions and Transworld Radio about K90 million for the services rendered the May 20, 2014 tripartite election.
Judiciary spokesperson Mlenga Mvula confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.
According to Mvula, Kalekeni Kaphale through a communiqué instructed Trustee Auctioneers and Estate Agency at the eleventh hour to take out the electoral body’s vehicles from list of items on sale.
Mvula said Kaphale has engaged he Secretary to the Treasury Ronald Mangani on the matter and they have arranged to meet any day this week and make arrangements on the settlement of the debt.
The vehicles which include two Nissan Patrols, a Nissan Caravan Minibus and three Nissan UD vans that United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) donated.
