President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is in two weeks’ time expected to announce news names of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioners to replace the current team.

MEC stopped functioning on May 17 following the expiry of current commissioners headed by Justice Maxon Mbendera S.C.

Confirmed of the development in an interview with the press, Presidential Press Officer Mgeme Kalilani said Mutharika is through with the process of scrutinizing the names provided by various political parties to be considered for the position.

Kalilani said Mutharika will be announcing the names in two weeks’ time.

Earlier, Kalilani blamed opposition political parties for late submission of names of possible persons, saying this will delay appointment process.

The names will be sent to parliament for approval once released.
