President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has been accused of being bias in the appointment of new commissioners of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
Mutharika appointed new MEC commissioners on Monday following the expiry of term of office of current commissioners and most of them are ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members.
According to the list seen by FaceofMalawi, DPP has contributed four members namely Ms Jean Mathanga, Rev. Killion Mgawi, Rev. Clifford Baloyi, Mr Moffat Banda while United Democratic front (UDF) has contributed two members (Mr Yahaya M’madi, MS Elvey Mtafu).
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and opposition People’s Party (PP) has contributed one member each.
Speaking in an interview with the press, Political analyst at Chancellor College Joseph Chunga has said DPP dominance in the commission is questionable.
Chunga said the President could have given all Parties in the country equal representation in MEC commissioners to buy trust from Malawians.
Meanwhile Mutharika’s appointment has also raised mixed reactions on the social media with others accusing him of planning to rig the 2019 general election.
