Three people are in Police custody in Machinga for allegedly being in possession of ivory worth MK36 million.

Machinga Police spokesperson Davie Sulumba confirmed of the development in an interview with the press and identified the suspects as James Mwera, 21, Mabvuto Giriford and Nyirongo.

Sulumba said the three were arrested after Police officers raided their houses.

After questioning, the suspects admitted, saying they have been killing elephants for the ivory from Liwonde National Park in Machinga using guns which they have been hiring.

The suspects will appear in court soon.
