Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and opposition People’s Party (PP) has accused President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of preparing to rig the 2019 general election.

The accusation follows the appointment of new commissioners for Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) by Mutharika which has seen DPP contributing four representatives, United Democratic Front (UDF) two representatives.

While MCP and PP have contributed one representative each, raising fears of rigging as it was in May 20, 2014 tripartite election.

Speaking in an interview with FaceofMalawi MCP Spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said the Mutharika’s appointment is a clear manifestation that DPP is planning to rig the 2019 election.

Kabwila said all parties submitted equal number of representative to be considered on the position but Mutharika gave his Party a lion’s share at the expense of other Parties.

On his part, PP spokesperson Ken Msonda said the appointment is worrisome.

“It seems the 2019 elections rigging strategy by the ruling DPP has started, we have to correct these anomalies before things get off hand.

“Malawians are peace loving, we are the warm heart of Africa, we don’t want what is happening in Kenya to happen here, dzuka Malawi dzuka (wake up Malawi wake up),” said Msonda.

Political analyst at Chancellor college, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (UNIMA) Joseph Chunga has also faulted Mutharika over the appointment, saying he is up for something.

Meanwhile debate continues over the newly appointed MEC commissioners.
