A thirteen year old boy died on Monday after drowning in Mbavi River in Lilongwe.

Lilongwe Police station Assistant Public Relations Officer, Magret Selemani identified the deceased as Anthony Square from Malowa village T/A Jalasi in Mangochi.

The deceased is said to one out for a swim with fellow friends at around 1 pm on the fateful day.

After jumping into the River the boy went to the other side of the river where the water was diverted due to the construction of a Bridge.

Unfortunately the deceased failed to come out of the water and some people who were around the place managed to rescue him.

The matter was reported to police by John Square, who is the deceased’s father and the boy was then taken to Mbavi Health Centre where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The deceased body was then taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital where for postmortem and it was established that the boy died of suffocation.

Meanwhile police are appealing to parents to look and guard after their children where such constructions are taking place to prevent such accidents.
