A 52 year old truck driver died Wednesday along the Lilongwe-Salima road when a stationary truck he was maintaining run over him.
Confirming the development, Dowa Police Public Relations Officer Richard Kaponda identified the man as Laston Mhango who was working with Nationwide Company of Lilongwe as truck driver.
Kaponda said the incident happened at Zangale village along the Lilongwe-Salima road where the deceased parked the vehicle due to a mechanical fault.
“The driver who was driving a truck registration number SA 4641 went underneath the car because it had developed a fault.
“ Whilst there, another truck freightliner with trailer registration number CZ 3963 loaded with 30 tonnes of fertilizer which was going towards Salima hit the stationary vehicle from behind forcing the stationary truck to move forward crushing its driver in the process and died instantly,” said Kaponda.
The freightliner driver whom Kaponda identified as Joseph Chikazunga aged 41, upon realizing that he had killed a fellow driver, stopped for few minutes and then drove away leaving the deceased lying dead on the spot of the accident.
The driver is reported to have been arrested at Mvera roadblock after a tip and has since been detained at Mvera police awaiting police investigations and trial.
Mhango hailed from Chikoka village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba and the accused hails from Sanjani village, T/A Ganya in Ntcheu district.
