As the country continues to pass through economic hardships, information sourced by FaceofMalawi indicates that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has called off this years independent Day Celebration scheduled for July 6.
Chief Secretary to the President, George Mkondiwa confirmed of the development in an interview with the press on Monday.
Mkondiwa said the only event for 6 July Day will be National Service of Worship at the Bingu International Conference Centre in the capital Lilongwe.
He said it will be not good for the country to spent huge sums on money on the Independence Day while millions of Malawians need foods.
Meanwhile Malawians have welcomed the move taken by government.
