Government has revealed that it has secured funds to repatriate 30 Malawian women trafficked and abused in Kuwait now stranded at Malawi’s Embassy.
The development comes barely two weeks after the media in the country exposed the abuses that Malawian women are passing through in Kuwait.
The women were coaxed to travelling to Kuwait at the pretense that they would find better jobs such as working in hotels and teaching.
The women were promised to be given money amounting to $500.
But things changed when they arrived there as most of them were forced to work as house maid.
One of the women told the press that she was given expired food and she was forced to work 24 hours without rest. Getting tired of this she escaped from the house and seek refuge at Malawi’s Embassy where she joined fellow women.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Francis Kasaila told Parliament on Tuesday that government has secured funds to repatriate the said women.
Kasaila said the arrangements are now at an advanced stage.
Many Malawians are leaving the country in search for decent jobs in other country such as South Africa, Kuwait and Dubai.
