As debate continues over the appointment of commissioners of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, FaceofMalawi can reveal that the issue has taken a new twist.

According to information at hand, Livingstonia Synod has protested the appointment of Reverend Clifford Baloyi, saying the church was not consulted.

Speaking in an interview with one of the local daily papers, Livingstonia Synod’s General Secretary Reverend Levi Nyondo has accused the DPP of trying to bring divisions within the Church.

Nyondo said Baloyi is a full time employee of the Synod hence the Church needs to be consulted.

Reacting to the claims, DPP trashed the claims, saying the Baloyi was appointed on personal capacity not as an employee of the Church.

Baloyi was appointed together with seven other commissioners with the ruling DPP get a lion’s share.

The development raised eyebrows among Malawians with Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and People’s Party (PP) accusing DPP of planning to rig the 2019 elections.
