President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has come out of his cocoon to trash media reports that he told Malawians to start eating grasshoppers and mice as food supplement following the hunger crisis in the country, saying he never said that.

The statement is in sharp contrast with Minister of Information Patricia Kaliati’s remarks, saying that President Mutharika was just cracking jokes on the matter.

Mutharika is quoted to have told the People of Mulanje two weeks ago that they should be resourceful in their search for food and money by eating ‘Zitete and Mice.

The remarks attracted mixed reactions from Malawians with others accusing him of being off track and playing with lives of starving Malawians.

But on Friday during roads inspection in Zomba, Mutharika trashed the media reports, saying he never mentioned Zitete but rather “Zicheche” which is commonly known to be yams in his district of Thyolo.

Mutharika accused the press of misleading Malawians on the matter by twisting facts on the matter.

“I never said Zitete, I said Zicheche,” said Mutharika.

Turning to albino killings, Mutharika warned perpetrator of this malpractice that his administration will not spare them.
