President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika arrived in in Addis Ababa Ethiopia Friday afternoon the University of Addis Ababa is to honour him with a degree of Doctor of Letters (D.Litt).
Upon arrival at the Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, President Mutharika who is accompanied by the First Lady Madame Dr. Getrude Mutharika was welcomed by the Ethiopian Minister of Interior Affairs, Mr. Kassa Tekie Briham; President of Addis Ababa University, Dr Ademassu Tsegaye; Malawi’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, His Excellency Chimango Chirwa; Malawi’s Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Kasaila and other officials of the government of Ethiopia.
The University of Addis Ababa says it decided to honour President Mutharika for his outstanding contribution to knowledge in Ethiopia, Africa and the world at large.
According to the President of Addis Ababa University, Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) honoris causa is among the highest honors the university confers on exceptional individuals with proven track record of academic excellence.
‘We feel honored to welcome such a distinguished scholar back on our campus’, said Dr Tsegaye.
In his academic life Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika who is also a Charles Nigeal Professor of Comparative Law Emeritus taught law at the University of Addis Ababa for a number of years before moving to lecture at the Washington University in the United States of America.
The University says in its many decades of existence it has also conferred the honour to other statesmen such as Bill Gates of the Bill Gates Foundation, former president of South Africa Thabo Mbeki, former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo and President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Eurdogan.
The ceremony conferring Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika with a degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa will take place at Millennium Hall in Addis Ababa on 9th July 2016.
