Information sourced by FaceofMalawi indicates that Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the country are planning to hold national wide demonstrations against the recent passed land bill.

The National Assembly on Wednesday passed a customary land bill that will force poor Malawians to pay tax from the land that they inherited from their ancestors.

The bill was tabled in Parliament by youthful Minister of Lands and Housing Atupele Muluzi who said all land holders will be demanded to register their land and then start paying tax.

The bill raised controversy in the house with opposition MPs led by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, saying Malawians will not afford the fees.

But DPP MPs remained adamant and passed the bill.

The land bill has shocked many Malawians and some even took the issue to the social media criticizing the ruling DPP on the matter, saying this is uncalled.

Others even warned DPP to tread carefully on the matter, saying the issue may affect the Party in the forthcoming 2019 general election.

Writing on his official facebook page one of the human right activists Billy Malaya urged Malawians to protest against the bill.

“We must demonstrate against the President assenting the Land Bill until Chiefs and citizens have been consulted. Tisapusitsidwe,” wrote Malaya.
Meanwhile opposition MPs have asked the President to veto the bill.
