Jill Biden, wife to United States Vice President, Joe Biden has with immediate effect suspended her trip to Machinga following a protest by Chancellor College students, a constituency college of the University of Malawi (UNIMA).
The students blocked US second lady Dr. Jill Biden’s motorcade at Matawale in Zomba and she had to seek refuge at Eastern region Police office waiting for the situation to calm down.
Dr. Bideni is now returning to Blantyre.
At the moment University Council has with immediate effect closed the College and students have been ordered to leave the campus by 4pm.
This has been disclosed in a press statement released by the council made available to FaceofMalawi.
According to information from the college, does not indicate when the school will be opened.
University of Malawi Students Union (Umsu) president Tionge Sikwese said they held demonstrations to force the university council to reverse the fee hike.
Unima council recently announced that mature entry students will be paying tuition fees ranging from K900 000 ($1249) to K1.4 million ($1 942), first year generic students will pay fees in the range of K400 000 ($555) to K600 000 ($833) while continuing students will pay K400 000 per annum.
Meanwhile police have arrested over 10 students for allegedly having a hand in the protest.
