One person has died while several other passengers have sustained injuries of different degrees when the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in an accident in Mangochi.

Mangochi Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Rodrick Maida told the Malawi News Agency that the accident occurred at Bwadabwa Bridge along the Mangochi — Makanjira road on Tuesday.

Maida said an Isuzu 3 tonne lorry was being driven by Yamikani Smart, 24, from the direction of Mangochi towards Makanjira while loaded with goods and several passengers.

“The accident happened on July 26 at around 8pm. The vehicle was coming from Mangochi heading to Makanjira loaded with goods and several passengers on top of the goods when it got involved in the accident.

“Upon arrival at Bwadabwa Bridge the driver lost control of the vehicle and it started reversing on the descent as a result it overturned once and plunged into the dry river,” Maida said.

Maida added that following the impact one passenger broke his neck and died on the spot.

The police publicist said seven other passengers who sustained serious injuries have been admitted to Mangochi District Hospital while six others escaped the accident with minor injuries.

Maida identified the deceased as Issa Wasili, 24, who hailed from Masale Village in the area of Traditional Authority Makanjira in Mangochi.MANA
