Opposition People’s Party (PP) Interim President Uladi Musa has backed University of Malawi (UNIMA) students for protesting against fee hike, saying the adjustment is unjustifiable.
Musa’s remark comes barely a week after Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera also defended the protest after meeting University of Malawi Student Union (UMSU) leadership in the capital Lilongwe.
Speaking during a rally in Zomba, Musa blamed authorities for taking wrong approach in raising fees, saying the authorities could have considered those people in the village when raising the fees.
Musa said the authority could have raised the fees with reasonable percentage and not 400%, saying Malawians are passing through difficult times due to economic downturn.
Turning to the continuance absence of its Party President Dr. Joyce Banda, Secretary General for the Party Ibrahim Matola said members will be informed when she is returning to Malawi.
Matola urged Party followers to continue support those people entrusted in running the affairs of the Party.
The meeting also saw the presence of the Party’s third Vice President for the North Kamlepo Kalua.
