The only opposition party which is strong enough to bring change into the country, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is politically divided by ironic veterans with interest to destroy a core team spirit within them so that their image of unity will be polluted.

Recently some of the party’s long serving regional and district committee members are asking the MCP president Lazarus Chakwera to step down as the party’s leader.

The members organized a press conference on Wednesday in Lilongwe where they demanded the resignation of the party president for failing to unite the MCP.

The MCP officials at the press conference also accused the party leader of robbing their confidence in his leadership and they want a convention to elect a new leader.

“You hear one problem after another in the party. We do not have a leader in MCP who should deal with the problems,” said one of the officials Chatinkha Chidzanja Nkhoma.

Meanwhile, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said it would be a good idea if Chakwera’s predecessor John Tembo mediates over the misunderstandings in the party following that 2019 elections are just around the corner and the party would need to be united ahead of the polls.
