Students from Polytechnic in Blantyre, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (UNIMA) have unanimously rejected President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s fees reduction by MK50,000, saying the money is not enough.
The rejection comes barely a week after Mutharika met with University of Malawi Student Union (UMSU) leaders to find lasting solution to the recent fee hike saga which has resulted to the indefinite closure of Chancellor College (CHANCO) in Zomba.
According to a statement released by Polytechnic Student Union leaders seen by faceofMalawi, 90 percent of the students at the institution have voted against the reduction, saying the money deducted from the fee is not enough.
The students say they want the tuition fee reduced further, saying if that is not done the students will join other students from CHANCO and Kamuzu College of Nursing in protesting.
The students have also urged the University Council to handle the fees issue with sober mind.
Meanwhile it is not yet known as to when CHANCO will be opened.
