University of Malawi (UNIMA) council has summoned Chancellor College (CHANCO) Students Union Leaders for disciplinary hearing over the recent violent protest against fee hike which led to the immediate closure of the college.

This has been confirmed in a letter addressed to the Students Union President Sylvester Ayuba James dated August 16, 2016 seen by FaceofMalawi reporter.

According to the statement, the Union leadership has been charged with two counts, interfering with administration of Chancellor College, unlawful assembly and protest.

The statement further says that the entire leadership is supposed to appear before the disciplinary committee on Monday.

The University Council raised the fees for normal entre and mature entry students by 400 percent, attracting strong protest from various stakeholders in the country.

The stakeholders argued that the adjustment is unjustifiable and pleaded with Mutharika to intervene on the matter.
