Malawi Congress Party (MCP) District Chairmen on Monday failed to testify in a case where they are pushing its leadership under President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for an early convention, claiming that they are receiving death threats.
Earlier this year, some disgruntled MCP officials sued the Party to call for an early convention, accusing Chakwera of being undemocratic and practicing nepotism.
The whole issue started when Chakwera made changes to the Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) which saw some top officials being demoted.
Appearing before the Lilongwe High Court Judge, Justice Charles Mkandawire, lawyer for the disgruntled MCP’s District Chairmen, Wesley Namasala asked the Judge to have the case adjourned.
Namasala said the District Chairmen who were scheduled to testify in the case have failed to turn up for the case due to threats that they are receiving from unknown people.
A part from that, Namasala claimed that one his clients scheduled to testify in the case is not feeling well hence the case should be adjourned to a later date.
Delivering his ruling before throwing out death threats claim, Justice Mkandawire adjourned the case October 3 and 4.
Recently Chakwera admitted that the Party is passing through troubled waters.
