Government has given in to calls by some Primary School students who took to the street protesting against teachers strike to force the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led government under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to act on the strike.

Primary school learners blocked roads in the capital Lilongwe while some invaded others schools where their fellows were learning to disrupt the classes.

Some of the students who spoke to the press during the protest said they were not happy that they were not learning due to the teachers’ sit-in and asked government to act on the matter as soon as possible.

Meanwhile Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has called of the strike, saying government has assured them that their grievances have been solved.

TUM Secretary General Dennis Kalekeni said his office has received letter from the Department of Human Resources that all Grade K teachers who succesfully passed the Grade K interviews in 2013 have been promoted.

He also said that government has released K103 million for their arrears.

Kalekeni further said TUM officials have seen evidence that Treasury has released money to Maneb for payment of Malawi School Certificate of Education examinations, saying both the arrears and invigilation fees would be paid starting September end.
