Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has come out of his cocoon to respond to the nine-paged letter addressed to him from the Party’s Secretary General Gustav Kaliwo.
Kaliwo’s letter dated September 13, 2016 addressed to Chakwera highlighted a number of problems rocking the Party such as lack of democracy, firing of some top officials deemed to be critical of Chakwera’s reign and others.
In his response, Chakwera said he cannot act on issues that are in court.
“I have read the contents of your letter with keen interest. As you are aware, all the issues you are raising and asking us to act upon are live in courts. As such, I have been advised that commenting on issues that are not concluded in court is sub judice and prejudicial to the administration of justice.
“I am, therefore, constrained to respond and act on them before the court process is over to allow the rule of law to prevail,” reads Chakwera’s letter dated September 15, 2016.
Chakwera also expressed shock over the conduct of Kaliwo, saying he could have tabled the issues in Nec meetings.
“It is my hope that you will present them in the next Nec meeting after the courts have concluded the case,” added Chakwera.
Of late, MCP has been embroiled in political squabbles which have seen some top officials being fired from the Party.
Recently former President of the Party Dr. John Tembo even offered himself to mediate in the squabbles, saying he is not happy with the leadership wrangles going around in the Party.
