Police in the bordering district of Mchinji have arrested 34 Congolese for crossing Malawi borders illegally.
One of the illegal immigrants confessed that they have used uncharted routes to cross the boundaries since they have no proper documents.
Confirming the development Wednesday Public Relations Officer for Mchinji Police Inspector Kaitano Lubrino said their intention hit a snag on Tuesday after police officers managing Mwami Border tactfully acted on a tip off from a well-wisher who informed them of the development.
“It is true, we have arrested the illegal immigrants from Congo who were trying to cross the border and this prompted us as police to institute a manhunt and we, in the process found them in a house of a Malawian woman within Kaombe village, Traditional Authority Mlonyeni here in Mchinji.”
Reports have indicated that these Congolese disembarked from a container truck and it is alleged that a Zambian bicycle tax operator ferried them into Malawi before the police arrested them.
Meanwhile, these immigrants have expressed worries over unbearable conditions in their homeland (DRC) hence seeking refuge in Malawi and now Mchinji Police said all the foreigners have been handed over to the department of Immigration to proceed with deportation process if necessary.
Out of 34 of these immigrants, report shows that 16 are children while 10 are women and 8 are men.
Police in Mchinji in a bid to reduce crime in the country is appealing to the general public to report all suspicious acts and crime in order to achieve a crime free nation.
