Students from Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi (UNIMA) has obtained injunction restraining the University Council from implementing the new fee hike.

Polytechnic Students Union Spokesperson Precious Chilundu confirmed of the development in an interview, saying the students obtained the injunction on Wednesday at the High Court in Blantyre.

Chindulu said the students argued that that due to delays in the Polytechnic academic calendar, the college is still in 2015/2016 academic year and not in the 2016/2017 academic year when the new fees structure will be effected.

“We obtained the injunction on Wednesday so this means when students come next month, the generic students will pay K55, 000 whilst the mature entry will pay K250000 per student, he said.

Chindulu has urged all students not to pay the new fees once the college opens on October 10 2016.

Students from Chancellor College, Kamuzu College of Nursing (KCN), College of Medicine and Polytechnic protested against fee hike.

The development forced Mutharika to reduce the fees by MK50,000 but the students didn’t agree to the reduction.
