As rumours continue to spread over the health of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika who is currently in the United States of America where he went to attend the United Nation General Assembly (UNGA), government has denied reports that Mutharika is ill, saying the rumours are untrue.

Government defence of Mutharika’s health comes amid reports hovering on the social media that the President is in hospital for heart problem.

According to the reports, Mutharika’s health has worsened and his relatives have advised him to step down but some DPP officials are insisting that he should remain on the helm.

But speaking in an interview with the press, Minister of Information Malison Ndau trashed the reports, saying President Mutharika is still strong.

Ndau said Mutharika is still in the United States of America to fulfill some official duties that he failed to accomplish while attending the UN General Assembly summits.

He further urged Malawians to stop spreading false rumours of the head of state.

Meanwhile analyst and human rights defender Rafik Hajat has urged the government to come on the open and disclose the exact duties that Mutharika is doing in the USA.

Hajat said government should also explain to Malawians as to whether the meetings that Mutharika is attending after the UN General Assembly are beneficial to the country or not.
