Lilongwe Magistrate Court has granted bail human right activist Billy Mayaya arrested on Tuesday for allegedly leading Malawians in demonstrating against power outages in the country.
Mayaya with two others have been charged with unlawful holding of demonstrations in the country.
Before granting bail to Mayaya, the presiding magistrate ordered the three to pay a bail bond of MK20,000.
The magistrate also ordered the three to provide two traceable and reliable surities each at K500,000 and every Tuesday at 9am be reporting at Lilongwe Police station once in a fortnight.
The Magistrate also ordered the three to surrender travel documents to Central Region Police Headquarters.
Mayaya’s bail hearing case also saw the presence of well-known human right activists in the country namely; Bright Kampaundi, Mr Mtumodzi, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Jessie Kabwila and others.
The CSOs converged at the court to show solidarity against Mayaya.
