Human right activist Billy Mayaya arrested on Tuesday for allegedly leading Malawians to protest against persistent power outages in the country is today expected to appear before Lilongwe Magistrate Court for bail hearing.

Mayaya together with his co-accused have been charged with holding demonstration without consent.

Yesterday the presiding Magistrate shifted the bail hearing today.

The police rounded up Mayaya and two others at area 18 round about, bundled them in a police vehicle and whisked them away as other protesters were insulting the law enforcers.

Meanwhile Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have pleaded for the immediate release of Mayaya, saying his arrest is uncalled for.
