The polytechnic Students have been spared for a moment in recent fees hike as High Court in Blantyre has ruled in favour of them.

Earlier this month,  Polytechnic Students obtained an injunction to stop the college administration from demanding the recently hiked fees from the students.

The students argued that due to delays in the Polytechnic academic calendar, the college is still in 2015/2016 academic year and not in the 2016/2017 academic year when the new fees structure will be effected.

Justice Healey Potani, said reasons raised by the students are credible hence they should pay the old tuition fees.

President of Polytechnic Students Union, Frank Msiska, expressed his happiness saying the Court has made a fair ruling and that it has acted independently.

“We will now hear from the management regarding the opening of the school. What is left now is for the council to open the college. As president of the students union, I will communicate to my fellow students who paid the hiked fees so that they should get back their money,” Msiska said.

Meanwhile students are optimistic that the management and the University Council will open the college soon as the  opening was postponed due to the matter which was in court but now that it has been resolved.

The University of Malawi (Unima) council raised the fees from K55,000 for government sponsored and K250,000 for self-sponsored students to a minimum of K300,000 while mature entry students at the college were expected to cough K900,000 per annum.
