As the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is today set to announce results of the by-election for Mchinji West constituency and in other four wards, information sourced by FaceofMalawi indicates that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) deployed its officials to rig the election.
According to reports from Mchnji Constituency, the ruling DPP sent its top officials to pause as MEC officials and one of them was the Country’s Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima’s personal assistant Moses Kuchingale.
Kuchingale was scene going around polling centres using government vehicle while putting on MEC jacket and barge.
In retaliation to the development, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials led by lawmaker Richard Chimwendo Banda chased away the PA and stoned his vehicle.
The development angered the DPP Secretary General Ecklen Kudontoni who mobilized thugs to hunt down MP Chimwendo Banda.
Other reports also indicates that DPP officials were giving handouts to voters at three centres namely; Mchinji Community Day Secondary School, Mchnji Secondary School and at Kamwendo Trading Centre.
Although this was the case, unofficial results show that MCP MP Jephter Mwale has won the election by over 10,000 votes.
While DPP has managed to secure two ward Councilor seats namely; Sadzi Ward in Zomba Central Constituency and Bunda Ward in Kasungu while MCP has scooped the remaining two.
MEC conducted by-elections in Mchinji West Constituency, Bembeke Ward in Dedza, Kaliyeka Ward in Lilongwe South East Constituency, Sadzi Ward in Zomba Central Constituency and Bunda Ward in Kasungu.
