Police in Nathenje have arrested 12 villagers for allegedly causing a havoc that led to the damaging of different properties at Nathenje Trading Centre in Lilongwe.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 20 November, 2016 at around 1100 hours.
On the fateful day, villagers from Phatha Village, Traditional Authority Chadza of Lilongwe district led by Group Village Headman Chakwawa invaded Nathenje Police alleging that police had in their custody a certain person who died last year and had resurrected.
Police officers who were on duty at that time tried to convince them that they had no such a person but the villagers in question could not understand.
In attempt to quash the reigning mind of the villagers, police officers reached the extent of taking group village headman Chakwawa to see into cells himself in which he found no such alleged person. To their surprise, Chakwawa and his subjects were not convinced and eventually, they started throwing stones and other objects towards the Police, blocking M1 road, smashing windscreens of vehicles, breaking Government offices around the area, stealing goods from moving vehicles and other breaking houses within Nathenje Trading Centre.
In the process of gunning down the violence perpetrated by the villagers in question, police managed to arrest Levison Kamasula, 25 and other 11 villagers.
Meanwhile, police are looking for Group Village Headman Chakwawa who is on the run to answer the charge of Inciting Violence.
The 12 suspects will appear before court to answer charges of Malicious Damage when police enquiries are completed.
