Rwandan genocide convict Vincent Murekezi has been remanded at Maula Prison in the capital Lilongwe waiting for a court hearing on Tuesday next week.

Murekezi was arrested on Thursday in the capital Lilongwe for allegedly having a hand in the 1994 Rwandan genocide which saw over 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus being killed.

The convict appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Patrick Chirwa at around 2 pm Thursday where he was told that he faces extradition to Rwanda on charges of genocide.

Central Region Police Prosecutor Revison Mangani told the court Murekezi was arrested at around 9:30 Thursday morning and was taken to court to be told details of the case he is expected to answer in the country.

Meanwhile leader of concerned citizen pushing for Murekezi’s extradition, Phillip Kamangira has expressed gratitude over the arrest, saying he is following the issue with keen.
