A Chinese national has been arrested at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) for allegedly attempting to smuggle ivory worthy over MK150,000.
KIA Police spokesperson Sapulini Chitonde confirmed of the development in an interview with the press, saying the Chinese national was arrested on Thursday while attempting to board a plane to China.
Chitonde said the ivory was found by officers who were conducting a search in the luggage of the suspect.
When quizzed of the ivory, the suspect accused his friend of implicating him in the matter, saying he didn’t know that the bag was containing the ivory since he borrowed the bag from a friend.
Meanwhile the Chinese national is yet to be released from Police cell.
