Misesa ward Councilor Lewis Ngalande has accused Minister of Local government Kondwani Nankhumwa of facilitating his defeat in the Mayoral polls held Monday in the commercial capital Blantyre.

Ngalande said this in an interview with the press just after the presiding officer of the mayoral polls announced the winner.

According to Ngalande, Nankhumwa instructed all Councillors not to vote for him and instead vote for Wild Ndipo who emerged victorious in the polls, saying he is a very difficult man.

“The DPP agreed that we should remove Chalamanda as mayor and I was chosen to be the party candidate. However, Nankhumwa was intimidating some councillors not to vote for me. He said they should vote for Wild Ndipo (who eventually won),” said Ngalande.

Reacting to the claims, Nankhumwa denied and asked Ngalande to produce evidence over his claims.

“I don’t know anything regarding Ngalande’s claims,” said Nakhumwa.

Adding his voice on the matter, DPP’s Regional Governor for the South Charles Mchacha accused Ngalande of bringing confusion in the Party.

Mchacha said that the Party agreed not to campaign for any Councillor for the mayoral polls due to the fact that most of the Councillors that were competing for the Mayorship were from DPP.
