The High Court in Lilongwe on Wednesday found guilty contractor Godfrey Dzanjalimodzi in charged related to money laundering of K338 million (about $610 000) in the ongoing investigations of the plunder of public funds dubbed cashgate which happened during the reign of Dr. Joyce Banda.

Dzanjalimodzi used his building company called WG Construction to siphon cash from public coffers between the month of April and September, 2013.

Judge Ivy Kamanga convicted Dzanjalimodzi of both charges of theft and money laundering, saying prosecution successfully proved their case beyond reasonable doubt.

The State had proven that Dzanjalimodzi was the only one with the password to the electronic banking facility of the company account and did not entertain questions from fellow directors who queried the unusual movements in the account.

State prosecutor Dziko Malunda said the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions was satisfied with the verdict even though the case has taken close to four years to be concluded.

“It just shows that it doesn’t matter how long a case takes, justice will be delivered,” Malunda said.

Justice Kamanag has since revoked bail of Dzanjalimodzi and remanded him to prison.

Meanwhile judgement in the case has been deferred to later date.
