The High Court in Mzuzu has finally suspended Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Dr. George Chaponda from discharging his duties as Minister until the commission of inquiry releases its findings on the Admarc maize saga.
The ruling follows as an application made by four Civil Society Organizations in Mzuzu led by Youth activist Charles Kajoloweka asking the court to make a judicial review on the matter.
In his ruling on Thursday, Justice John Chirwa ordered Chaponda to seize being a minister until proven clean on the transactions made with Zambian private company Kaloswe.
Reacting to the ruling, Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale has said the state will challenge the ruling after receiving the order.
Kaphale accused the court sitting in the ever green city of Mzuzu of making a fundamental error.
Meanwhile Human right activist Billy Mayaya and opposition People’s Party (PP) third Vice President for the North Kamlepo Kalua have both welcomed the ruling.
