Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Dr. George Chaponda is still executing his duties as Minister despite the High Court in Mzuzu suspending him as Minister to pave way for smooth investigation into the controversial maize saga involving Malawi and Zambia.
High Court Judge Justice Chirwa on Thursday last week ordered for the immediate suspension of Chaponda over his alleged involvement in the procurement of Maize from Zambia to Malawi following reports that the maize was bought at an exorbitant price.
But reports reaching faceofMalawi indicates that Chaponda has secretly left the country for Germany for official duties as Minister of Agriculture.
According to a Memo by honourable Khadi Camara posted on facebook by Human right activist Billy Mayaya, indicates that Chaponda arrived in Germany this morning.
“Dear Particpants of the Round Table Malawi,
“We are happy to announce that the Hon. Minister of Agriculture will be in Germany after all. Since he is only arriving tomorrow morning we have to push the meeting to 10.30am until 12.30pm, tomorrow Friday, January 20th at our office at Friedrichstraße 206, 10969 Berlin.
“If you booked a train or flight for tomorrow already please feel free to stay at our office with coffee and Wi-Fi until the Hon Minister arrives,” reads in part the memo.
Earlier this week Civil Society Organisation (CSOs) led Charles Kajoloweka raised fears that Chaponda might not follow the court ruling.
Meanwhile officials from government are yet to comment on the development.
